I turn to a less familiar starting point: a fence post. Normally fixed in the ground, marking a boundary, it becomes a participant in changing configurations. I cut the solid wood into sections and reconnect them with hinges, not simply to open and close, but to establish a friendship between the wood, its former function, myself, and the many arrangements we might discover together. Something once associated with rigidity is given an opportunity for play. I begin with an intention, but the wood’s grain, weight, and resistance guide what happens next. The hinges offer movement without prescribing a n exact functionality. Each configuration emerges through an exchange: I move the wood, and the wood can ask me to try again or reconsider.
